David Warner has officially been appointed as the captain of the Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, following the recent removal of his long-standing leadership ban. The ban, implemented by Cricket Australia after the 2018 Newlands ball-tampering scandal, had prohibited Warner from holding any leadership position in Australian cricket for the past five years. However, a ruling from Cricket Australia’s Code of Conduct Commission last month has now cleared Warner to lead, allowing him to take the helm for the Thunder’s full season.
David Warner on return to his captaincy
For David Warner, captaining the Thunder is an honour he deeply values. Reflecting on his role, he stated, “Captaining the Thunder again this season means a lot to me. I was part of the team from the start, and now to be back with that ‘C’ next to my name feels fantastic. I’m looking forward to leading from the front and sharing my experience with the young talent coming through.” Warner added that he aims to support and mentor the team’s emerging players, saying, “One of the most exciting parts of this role is the chance to give back to the younger players, to pass on some of the knowledge I’ve gathered over the years. I want to help them grow so that one day, one of these young guns can step up and lead the team when I’m done.”
Building legacy for Sydney Thunder
Sydney Thunder’s general manager, Trent Copeland, who played a key role in the appeal process, believes this new role allows Warner to solidify a lasting legacy at the club. “This is a huge moment for David and for our club,” Copeland explained. “It’s not only about his career; it’s about the legacy he’s creating, especially for his family and the next generation of players.” Copeland emphasised that Warner’s captaincy represents more than just a cricketing milestone: “For the fans in Western Sydney who’ve long recognised David as a Thunder legend, it’s a special moment to now see him as their captain. This captaincy is about more than cricket; it’s about community, legacy, and helping our younger players gain the skills they need to succeed.”
Previous leadership experience of David Warner
Warner’s experience as a leader is not limited to his early days with Thunder. Since his Cricket Australia (CA) ban, he has captained various international franchise teams, including stints in the Bangladesh Premier League, Indian Premier League, and the ILT20.
He last led an Australian team in a T20I series against New Zealand in 2018. Warner will be taking over the role from Chris Green, who captained the Thunder last season, when the team finished last in the standings. Praising Green and another former interim captain, Jason Sangha, Warner noted, “I want to compliment the way Greeny led from the front. He’s an exceptional talent with fantastic leadership qualities. Jason Sangha, too, before his injury. I gained great insight from both, and I know they’re guys I can lean on this season.”
Reflections on leadership ban
